Architects and designers are rethinking senior living designs to address the preferences of the incoming baby boomer generation. Such residents want more connectivity, opportunities for socialization, inter-generational mingling, and community connections. Realizing that a one-size-fits-all approach won’t work, designers are incorporating elements that bring the outside community in, such as public-facing retail storefronts, restaurants, and unique dining spaces. They’re also finding ways to accommodate community concerts and food trucks. “The big idea there is that it’s not just a standalone senior living community,” says one architect.
